Married To the former Mollie Perry of Marion, Perry County, Alabama.
They have three (3) children – one daughter, Irva Elaine; two sons, Joe Morgan and Stephen Louis.

Elementary and high school education in the public schools of Conecuh County.
Served in Korea with the United States Army, 1956-58

Education:
Alabama State University, Montgomery, 1958-62. Graduated with Bachelor of Science degree in Social Studies. Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, 1964-66. Graduated with Master of Arts degree in Political Science
 

Career Highlights:
Employed as a teacher at Trenholm High School, Tuscumbia, Alabama, in September, 1962. Returned to Alabama State University in January, 1963, as Coordinator of Student Activities

At age 25, was appointed Executive Secretary of the Alabama State Teachers Association, where he served from 1964-69

Member of local, state, and national professional associations for entire professional career. Life member of NEA and AEA
 

Member of Executive Board, National Council of State Education Associations (NCSEA), 1969-78, including serving as president of that organization
 

Consultant, Alabama Professional Rights and Responsibilities Commission, since its establishment
 

Delegate to the NEA 1972 Constitutional Convention. Member of Drafting Committee.

 
Staff advisor for numerous committees and commissions of the United Teaching Profession

 

Civic, Fraternal and Political Affiliations

Chairman, Alabama Democratic Conference, the Black Political Caucus of Alabama.
 

Former member, Alabama Advisory Committee on Civil Rights of the U. S. Civil Rights Commission.

Currently vice Chairman for Minority Affairs, Democratic Party of Alabama.

Past Chairman, NAACP Committee on Education in Alabama.

Chairman, Alabama League for the Advancement of Education.

Delegate, Democratic National Conventions, 1968, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988,

1992, 1996, and 2000, he chaired the Alabama Delegation. In 2004, he served as vice chair. In 2008, he served as secretary.

Recognized by South Magazine as the seventh most influential citizen in Montgomery, Alabama. In 2009, was recognized by the Alabama New York Times Affiliates, the Tuscaloosa New, the Gadsden Times, and Florence Times as one of the 12 most influential citizens of Alabama.
